横山カイン勝巳は1994年、秋吉台国際現代音楽セミナー＆フェスティバルにてデビューした日本の作曲家である。同年、Francis Baconの絵画から触発されたデビュー作《Music for Head IV》が同フェスティバル作曲賞を受賞した。

Chaya Czernow​inに師事。1997年の「音を野生の命のまま構造に生かす」という問いは、2021年には「素材の命そのものとなって、その意志をつかみ、そこから構造を生成していく」という言葉へと深化した。この移行は、横山の作品世界においても、Early Worksから《Requiem》以降の作品群への変容と並走している。

その問いは技法の指針であると同時に、より根源的な次元での実践でもあった。作品として形になるかどうかに関わらず、創作の内的営みは持続した。制度的な「芸術」の問題である前に、内側から湧き出す何かに形を与えようとする——そうした実存と直結した創作の在り方は、アール・ブリュットの思想とも深く共鳴する。

トロンボーン奏者Barrie Webbとの協働は、作品世界の核を形成している。1999年の《Traces II》に始まり《Requiem... ad vitam aeternam》（2013–2015）、《挽歌》（2022）へと続く四半世紀の共同作業は、楽器の概念そのものを問い直す実践の記録でもある。

主な活動拠点は日本。作品はルーマニア（イントラーダ新音楽フェスティバル、ブカレスト新音楽の国際音楽週間）、デンマーク等、ヨーロッパの現代音楽フェスティバルで演奏されている。

独学で作曲を始め、後に山田武彦、ハヤ・チェルノヴィンに師事。
秋吉台国際20世紀音楽セミナー&フェスティバル、Darmstadt 国際夏季音楽講習会などで細川俊夫、ブライアン・ファーニハウ、ヘルムート・ラッヘンマン、マグヌス・リンドベルイなどのレッスンを受け、研鑽を積む。

Katsumi Cain Yokoyama is a Japanese composer who began composition as self-taught, later studying with Takehiko Yamada and Chaya Czernowin. He has participated in masterclasses at the Akiyoshidai International Contemporary Music Seminar & Festival and the Darmstadt International Summer Courses with Toshio Hosokawa, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, and Magnus Lindberg.
He is the recipient of the Akiyoshidai 20th Century Music Festival Composition Prize (1994) and the Performing Arts Creation Award of the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs (2003).
Since 1999, Yokoyama has participated in The Japan Project, the ongoing collaboration series with Barrie Webb. Their collaboration Requiem... ad vitam aeternam for trombone solo, composed for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, received its world premiere in Tokyo on 11 March 2016, the fifth anniversary of the disaster, and its European premiere at the International Week of New Music in Bucharest. A CD recording was released on Trombone Classics (UK). Stuart Dempster described the work as "powerful in just the right way for the memorial tribute intention."
